Do you need an IDP for driving in United States?

US states accept foreign licenses for visits (durations vary by state); several states formally expect non-English licenses to be accompanied by an international permit or translation, and rental desks apply their own stricter corporate rules nationwide.

The US-specific reader is the insurance/DMV complex: accident reports, police stops and rental claims process license data into systems built for US formats. Non-English cards without documentation are refused at desks (Hertz/Avis policy, not just law); the booklet is the desk-unlock.

My license is in English — skip the IDP?

Most states and desks accept English-language licenses alone for tourists. The booklet earns its fee for non-English cards (mandatory at desks), for states with formal IDP language, and for the insurance-claim moment where matching classes matter.

Legal after a full stop unless signed otherwise, almost everywhere except NYC. The full stop is the enforced part. Left on red exists between one-way streets in some states, follow local plates' lead.
