Do you need an IDP for driving in Brazil?

Brazil (1968 convention) accepts foreign licenses for 180 days, formally alongside the international permit or when the license is readable; PRF highway police and city agents process Portuguese first, and the CNH-format expectation shapes what 'readable' means.

Brazilian enforcement is document-digital (fines to the plate, points to the driver record): when a human step involves your foreign license, the Portuguese page prevents the creative transcription that makes later disputes exhausting.

Renting a car in {country}

Localiza/Movida dominate with modern fleets and honest apps. Ethanol/flex fuel is standard (cheaper, fine for rentals). Book automatics ahead outside big cities. Cross-state one-ways are routine; cross-border is not.

PRF highway checkpoints are professional; city blitzes check documents and alcohol (0.00%; Brazil's Lei Seca means literally dry, with breathalyzer refusal fined too). Radar is dense and marked; the marking is a courtesy, not a suggestion.

How to get an international driving permit for Brazil

  1. Check you qualify

    A full national license held for the trip, 18 or over, and a destination where the document is accepted. Learner permits do not qualify.

  2. Choose official permit or translation

Brazil is US-scale: São Paulo→Foz is 850 km of real day. Flights + regional rentals beat epic hauls; the classic loops (Sul's serras, Minas' colonial towns, Bahia's Chapada) each deserve their own pickup.

Are the radar warnings reliable?

Fixed radars are signed by law and mapped by Waze (national religion). Mobile PRF radar exists on federal highways. The system is transparent: drive the posted number and Brazil's fines never find you.
