Do you need an IDP for driving in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica accepts foreign licenses alongside your passport entry stamp for the visa period; carry both while driving, it's the actual legal requirement checked. Non-English/Spanish licenses benefit from readable documentation at tránsito stops and insurer moments.

The mandatory paper trail here is insurance: the state liability (bundled) plus the deposit-backed excess. Claims and the famous roadside tránsito reports read your documents; the booklet keeps your side of a two-language report unambiguous.

Renting a car in {country}

The quoted price triples with mandatory SLI at pickup, every forum's rite of passage; budget $50–70/day real for a proper 4x4. Adobe/Vamos-class locals beat internationals on honesty. Take the 4x4 for any itinerary with 'verde' in it.

If you're stopped

Tránsito checkpoints check license + passport stamp; speed radar lives on Route 27 and the 34. Never pay roadside 'fines' in cash; tickets process through the rental. River-crossing incidents void everything, which the contract mentions in bold.

How to get an international driving permit for Costa Rica

  1. Check you qualify

    A full national license held for the trip, 18 or over, and a destination where the document is accepted. Learner permits do not qualify.

  2. Choose official permit or translation

Costa Rica questions, straight answers

Do I really need the 4x4?

Monteverde, Nosara/Sámara backroads, Drake Bay side: yes, genuinely; gravel grades and wet-season fords are standard. La Fortuna–beaches mainline: a sedan survives. The 4x4 converts stress into adventure; that's what you're renting.

Waze or Google here?

Waze is the national navigator, it knows the fords, closures and that 'roads' have opinions. Distances lie: 100 km = 3 hours in the hills. Plan by time, drive by daylight.

Rivers — when do crossings apply?

Wet season (May–Nov) on Nicoya and Osa tracks. The rule: walk it first or watch a local truck line; contracts void on water damage universally. When in doubt, the long way around exists.

The insurance triple-price shock — avoidable?

The mandatory SLI portion isn't (state requirement ~$15–25/day). The excess/CDW layer is where cards and standalone policies can substitute, with deposit blocks up to $2–3k. Book with locals who price honestly upfront.
