How to get an international driving license for Indonesia
Bali runs on scooters, Lombok and Flores on rented 4x4s, and the police checkpoint outside Canggu runs on paperwork. Indonesia is one of the highest-fine, highest-stop destinations for foreign riders anywhere.
Do you need one for Indonesia?
Indonesian traffic police expect foreign drivers to present an international permit or readable license documentation together with the original. Bali's tourist-zone checkpoints (Canggu, Uluwatu, Ubud roadworks) are famous for stopping visibly foreign riders every morning of high season.
The conversations at those stops are short and paper-based. A license card in your language plus nothing is a negotiation; a license plus a 12-language translation open to Bahasa Indonesia is usually a wave-through. Riders report on-the-spot 'fines' of 250,000–500,000 IDR without paperwork.
At the rental desk
Scooter rentals in Bali rarely ask for anything beyond a deposit and a photo of your passport — which is exactly why the risk transfers to you on the road. Car rentals in Jakarta, Surabaya or airport desks check documents properly and may refuse an unreadable license, especially for multi-day 4x4 hires.
If you're stopped
Pull over completely, engine off, helmet stays on your head until parked. Hand over the booklet with your license inside it. Officers flip to the Bahasa page, match the photo, and the stop typically ends there — the document answers the question they're legally allowed to ask.

Do Bali police really check every morning?
In high season, on the Canggu shortcut and the Uluwatu road — yes, effectively daily. Locals get waved past; foreigners on scooters get stopped. It is the single most predictable police interaction in Indonesian tourism.
My license has no motorcycle class. Will the translation fix that?
No — and we won't pretend otherwise. The translation restates what your license says. If it says cars only, the Bahasa page says cars only. Ride a scooter on it and a diligent officer or insurer can still call it unlicensed riding.
Car with driver or self-drive outside Bali?
Outside Bali and Java's toll network, self-drive is genuinely demanding (trucks, night buses, goats). Many travellers hire car-with-driver for Flores or Sumatra; if you self-drive, your paperwork gets checked at inter-district posts, not just tourist zones.
Is the digital PDF enough in Indonesia?
Carry print. Checkpoint officers handle physical documents; fishing a PDF out of a cracked phone in the rain convinces nobody. The booklet + your license card is the combination that works.
