Do you need an IDP for driving in India?

India requires foreign drivers to carry an international permit or license documentation acceptable to state transport authorities, always with the original license. Goa's traffic police are the most active checkers of foreign riders in the country.

Between states, rules and tolerance vary, which is exactly why carrying the 12-language translation matters: it answers the question the same way in Panaji, Jaipur and Manali, and it lists your vehicle classes for the scooter-rental conversation.

Renting a car in {country}

Self-drive apps (Zoomcar and friends) and airport desks want clean documents and a card deposit. Goa scooter shops want almost nothing, the police checkpoints there compensate. Car-with-driver remains the mainstream choice for intercity Rajasthan and the south; self-drive is best for Goa, Kerala backroads and hill loops.

If you're stopped

Expect document checks at state borders and tourist strips (Calangute, Anjuna). Present booklet + license; keep rental papers handy. Fines are formalised through e-challans now, readable paperwork keeps you on the ticket side rather than the 'come to the station' side.

How to get an international driving permit for India

  1. Check you qualify

    A full national license held for the trip, 18 or over, and a destination where the document is accepted. Learner permits do not qualify.

  2. Choose official permit or translation

    The official permit comes from the authorised body in the country that issued your license (usually a same-day counter service, about $15–30). Our 12-language translation is the private alternative you carry alongside the original.

India questions, straight answers

Is Goa really strict with foreign riders?

It's the one place in India where checks on tourists are routine, morning checkpoints on the beach-belt roads in season. Helmet + license with two-wheeler class + readable format is the pass combination.

Can I drive a rented Royal Enfield to Leh?

Yes with the right license class and altitude respect. Rohtang/Baralacha checkposts check permits for the vehicle (and environment fees); your personal paperwork gets reviewed at the same windows.

Automatic cars — findable?

Increasingly, in cities and via apps. Book ahead. Traffic itself is the real transmission: assume anything can appear from any direction, and use the horn as a courtesy signal like everyone else.

Does the translation help with e-challans?

It helps at the human step, the officer reading your license. Camera fines go to the vehicle owner (the rental company) and get passed to you regardless; that's contractual, not paperwork-fixable.
