Driving in Japan: IDP and foreign-license requirements

Hokkaido road trips, the Hakone loops, Okinawa's island highways; Japan rewards drivers like nowhere else. It is also absolutely rigid about which document lets a foreigner rent: and a private translation is not it.

Not valid — official IDP only

Do you need an IDP for driving in Japan?

Japan accepts exactly two things: the official 1949-convention IDP issued by government-authorised bodies (AAA, JAF partners, your national automobile association), or, for a short list of countries like Germany, France, Switzerland and Taiwan, an official JAF translation of your license obtained in Japan.

Private translations have zero standing. Rental counters run document checks like passport control; without the right paper you will not receive keys, full stop. That's why we don't sell for Japan; nothing we could print changes the JAF checklist.

Renting a car in {country}

Toyota Rent-a-Car, Nippon, Times; all will photograph your official IDP next to your license and passport. Book the ETC toll card with the car. Everything else about renting in Japan is famously pleasant once the document hurdle is passed correctly.

If you're stopped

You're unlikely to be stopped without cause; if you are, Japanese police check documents meticulously. Driving without the accepted document is treated as unlicensed driving, a serious offence, not a fine-and-go.

Why won't your translation work if JAF's does?

Because Japanese law names JAF (and embassies/consulates) as the only recognised translators, and only for specific countries. Recognition is about the issuer, not the languages on the page.

I'm already in Japan without an IDP. Options?

If your license country is on the JAF translation list, order it now (rush service exists). If not, there is no legal fix this trip; trains are world-class consolation.

How long is the official IDP valid in Japan?

One year from issue, and Japan also caps usage tied to your entry. For stays beyond a year, you convert to a Japanese license (gaimen kirikae).

Okinawa vs mainland — same rules?

Identical rules, and Okinawa's rental desks see the most tourist document failures in Japan. The document check happens before the beach, not after.

Do you need an IDP for driving in Japan?

We don't sell what doesn't work. For Japan, authorities accept only the official permit issued in your home country. Get that instead; here's how:

1949-country licenses (US, UK, AU, CA, most of EU): get the official IDP from your automobile association before flying, typically a same-day counter service around $15–30. German, French, Swiss, Belgian, Monaco, Taiwan, Estonian licenses: order the official JAF translation (about ¥4,000, a few days); JAF's site takes online orders to your hotel.
