Do you need an IDP for driving in Thailand?

Thai law expects foreign drivers to carry an international permit or a recognised translation alongside their home license. In practice, what the person at the counter or the checkpoint needs is to understand what your license says, the format matters less than the readability.

Police checkpoints around tourist zones (Phuket, Samui, Pai) stop scooters daily. Riders with only a home-country card in Latin or Cyrillic script routinely pay on-the-spot fines of 500–1,000 THB. A 12-language translation carried with your license removes the argument before it starts.

Renting a car in Thailand

International chains at BKK and DMK airports check papers carefully; local shops in the islands mostly want a passport deposit. The translation matters most for cars from the big desks and for insurance claims; an unreadable license is the classic excuse to void coverage on a scooter scrape.

Stay calm, hand over booklet + license together, and let the officer flip to the Thai page. Fines for riding without a helmet or license paperwork are typically settled at the local station; the readable page usually turns a license dispute into a helmet ticket only.

How to get an international driving permit for Thailand

  1. Check you qualify

    A full national license held for the trip, 18 or over, and a destination where the document is accepted. Learner permits do not qualify.

  2. Choose official permit or translation

Do I need one for a scooter under 125cc?

Yes: Thai checkpoints treat scooters as vehicles like any other, and scooter riders are exactly who gets stopped most. Your home license must actually cover motorcycles (class A) for the translation to help you; a car-only license translated is still a car-only license.

Is an IDP legally required in Thailand?

Thailand recognises the international permit conventions, and enforcement in tourist provinces is real. What happens if I rent with just my home license?

The shop will usually still rent to you; their business is renting. The risk lands later: checkpoint fines and, worse, an insurer refusing a claim because your license wasn't valid for the vehicle or readable to the assessor.

The islands and the north, by far. Phuket, Samui, Phangan and the Pai loop have regular morning checkpoints in high season. Bangkok stops tourists on two wheels near nightlife districts.
