Do you need an IDP for driving in South Africa?

South African law is unusually clear: a foreign license is valid if it's in English or accompanied by a certificate of authenticity/translation, and an international permit satisfies this. Non-English licenses legally need the document, and rental desks + traffic officers apply it.

Insurance follows the same line: claims on unreadable licenses generate disputes SA insurers are structured to win. English-license holders travel light legally; everyone else's booklet is doing legal work, not just convenience.

Renting a car in {country}
