Do you need an IDP for driving in Spain?

EU/EEA licenses drive in Spain unconditionally. For everyone else: US, UK post-arrangements aside, Australian, Latin American licenses, Spain formally expects an international permit or official translation with the license, and the Guardia Civil's roadside checks are where the formality wakes up.

The second moment is the rental desk excess dispute or insurance claim: files with cleanly documented licenses settle; files where the assessor couldn't parse a foreign card format grow correspondence. The translation is the pre-answer.

Renting a car in Spain

Airports run high-volume desks with aggressive excess-insurance upselling; decline calmly if you carry coverage. Spanish city cars are small for a reason (medieval parking); take the compact. ZBE low-emission zones in Madrid/Barcelona apply to rentals with their stickers sorted, but not to entering the wrong bus lane, which cameras bill precisely.

Guardia Civil traffic checks are polite and paper-quick: license, permit/translation for non-EU cards, rental contract. Radar coverage is extensive on autovías. Roundabout discipline (outside lane exits) is the local rule tourists break most.

How to get an international driving permit for Spain

  1. Check you qualify

    A full national license held for the trip, 18 or over, and a destination where the document is accepted. Learner permits do not qualify.

  2. Choose official permit or translation

I have a UK license — what's the current position?

UK cards are recognised for short stays under the post-Brexit arrangements. Carrying the international documentation still smooths desk and police moments, UK format quirks (paper counterparts, old categories) confuse non-UK systems regularly.

Is Barcelona-to-Costa-Brava worth a car?

The N-260 coast and inland Empordà, yes. Barcelona itself, no: park at the airport or Girona and treat the city by metro. Break-ins target obvious rental parking; boot-empty is the rule.

Menorca/Mallorca in August — booking reality?

Book cars earlier than flights. Island fleets sell out and prices triple. Cala parking fills by 9:30; the best coves are walk-in-from-the-road anyway.

What's a ZBE and does it bite rentals?

Low-emission zones in the big cities. Rental fleets carry compliant stickers, so the practical risk is bus-lane and delivery-bay cameras; Spanish cities bill those with industrial efficiency.
