Driving in Saudi Arabia: IDP and foreign-license requirements
AlUla's canyons, the Riyadh–Edge of the World track, the new coastal highways: Saudi Arabia opened to tourism and its rental counters opened with it. Documents follow GCC logic, strict at the desk, digital behind it.
Translation from $39 digital, $49 with printed booklet and wallet card. Pricing
Do you need an IDP for driving in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia expects foreign visitors to carry an international permit or recognised documentation with their license; English-format licenses get practical tolerance at many desks, other scripts do not. Insurance validity language in rental contracts references properly documented licenses.
Absher-era enforcement is digital: fines and incidents process through national systems where your license data gets typed by someone who may not read your language. The translation keeps that typing accurate; misrecorded license data is a annoying thing to fix from abroad.
Renting a car in {country}
Riyadh and Jeddah airport desks (Budget, Theeb, Lumi) run passport + visa + license checks; non-Latin licenses without international documentation face refusals. Cars are cheap, fuel cheaper; distances are American-scale, plan fatigue like a US road trip.
If you're stopped
Checkpoints exist on inter-region highways; tourists are treated courteously. Present license + translation together. Saher cameras handle speed enforcement; the human stops are about documents and awareness, and readable papers end them quickly.
How to get an international driving permit for Saudi Arabia
-
Check you qualify
A full national license held for the trip, 18 or over, and a destination where the document is accepted. Learner permits do not qualify.
-
Choose official permit or translation
The official permit comes from the authorised body in the country that issued your license (usually a same-day counter service, about $15–30). Our 12-language translation is the private alternative you carry alongside the original.
-
Send your documents
Portrait photo, license front and back, signature. Two minutes on your phone, after payment. Every file is checked by hand.
-
Receive and drive
PDF within 24 hours of your documents passing review; booklet and wallet card by tracked mail, 10–20 business days (express 5–7).

Saudi Arabia questions, straight answers
Which licenses get direct acceptance?
GCC licenses broadly, and practice is lenient with US/UK/EU cards at major desks. 'Lenient practice' is not a contract term though; the international documentation is what removes desk discretion from your holiday.
Women driving — any special requirements?
None beyond the standard documents; the 2018 change is fully operational. Female travellers rent and drive throughout the Kingdom; desks process documents identically.
AlUla and remote areas — fuel and range?
Stations are spaced for locals who plan. Full tank at Tabuk/AlUla town, and treat 200 km gaps as normal. Offline maps: Google covers the Kingdom well.
Is the Edge of the World drivable in a rental?
The last stretch is graded track; most contracts exclude it. Tours run daily from Riyadh; taking a rental sedan there is how deposits get spent.
Guidance reviewed August 2026. Rules change: confirm current requirements with local authorities or your rental company before you drive.
