Do you need an IDP for driving in Morocco?

Morocco recognises the convention framework and expects foreign drivers to carry readable license documentation with the original; French-format licenses pass natively, others meet gendarmerie checkpoints that process French and Arabic.

The checkpoint rhythm (entering/leaving towns, mountain junctions) is Morocco's signature: polite, frequent, document-based. License + booklet open to the French page + rental papers = the wave. Unreadable cards invite the longer conversation everyone describes on forums.

Renting a car in {country}

Marrakech and Casablanca airports host internationals and solid locals; diesel Dusters are the kingdom's rental uniform. Inspect scratches on video, confirm the spare exists, and take the second driver seriously: Atlas days are long.

If you're stopped

Gendarmerie checkpoints are courteous and constant; radar guns work the 60-zones at town entries precisely. Fines are fixed-schedule with receipts, insist politely on the receipt and everything stays official. Never drive after dark rurally: unlit trucks and wandering everything.

How to get an international driving permit for Morocco

  1. Check you qualify

    A full national license held for the trip, 18 or over, and a destination where the document is accepted. Learner permits do not qualify.

  2. Choose official permit or translation

    The official permit comes from the authorised body in the country that issued your license (usually a same-day counter service, about $15–30). Our 12-language translation is the private alternative you carry alongside the original.

Morocco questions, straight answers

Checkpoint etiquette — what's expected?

Slow down, window down, 'salam alaikum', documents ready. It's administrative rhythm, not suspicion. With the French-page booklet the officer confirms name/class and waves; the whole culture runs on mutual courtesy.

Tizi n'Tichka or Tizi n'Test to the south?

Tichka: engineered, safe, trucked, the standard. Test: narrower, wilder, emptier, the connoisseur's road, needing confidence and daylight. Both deserve dry weather; check conditions in shoulder seasons.

Radar at town entries — the 60 trap?

Every town entry drops to 60 (then 40) with a gendarme + radar gun regularly stationed at exactly the sign. Brake before the sign, not at it. It's the most predictable fine in Morocco.

Sahara routes — rental sedan to Merzouga?

Paved to the dunes' edge (Merzouga/M'Hamid); sedans make it. The pistes beyond are 4x4 tour territory, contract-excluded. Sunset from Erg Chebbi asks only that you arrive by tar.
