Do you need an IDP for driving in Australia?

Australian states accept English-language foreign licenses for visits outright; non-English licenses must carry an English translation or international permit; it's explicit state law (NSW/VIC/QLD all say it), checked at hire desks and by police.

Renting a car in Australia

If you're stopped

How to get an international driving permit for Australia

Kangaroos — how real is the risk?

Real enough that rental contracts price it: dawn/dusk strikes are the standard outback claim. Rule: don't drive rural roads at dawn/dusk/night; if a roo commits, brake straight; swerving into trees is how injuries happen.

Road trains — passing protocol?

50+ metres of triple trailer at 100 km/h: overtake only with kilometres of visibility, expect suction, and when they overtake you, hold steady left. On dirt: pull over entirely and let the dust settle.

Melbourne's hook turn — what?

CBD tram-street right turns start from the LEFT lane (signed 'Right turn from left only'). Wait in the intersection's left, turn when the perpendicular light greens. It's the one manoeuvre worth rehearsing on YouTube first.

Fuel planning on the big crossings?

Nullarbor/Stuart: stations every 100–200 km, but 'every' assumes open; carry buffer below half. Card-at-pump is universal; the roadhouse steak sandwich is mandatory culture.
