Do you need an IDP for driving in United Kingdom?
The UK lets most foreign license holders drive for 12 months on the home license alone, one of the world's most liberal regimes. The catch: the license must be readable to the person checking it, and non-Latin-script licenses meet hire desks and police checks that can't read them.
For US/EU/Commonwealth cards, your documentation rides along for insurer files and hire-desk second drivers. For Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Thai licenses, the translation is the difference between the desk's yes and no: UK agencies refuse unreadable cards daily.
Renting a car in {country}
UK desks check DVLA codes for UK licenses and passports + license for foreign ones. Manuals are default: automatics cost more and sell out. Excess levels are high; independent excess insurance is the local money-saver.
If you're stopped
Traffic stops are uncommon and camera enforcement is universal (average-speed zones on motorways, and yes, they average). Drink limit is lower in Scotland (0.05%) than England/Wales (0.08%); the NC500 runs through the stricter one.

First time on the left — what actually helps?
The driver sits at the road's centre, hold that thought at junctions and after every petrol stop (the classic mistake is pulling out onto the left-hand kerb). Roundabouts: clockwise, give way to the right. Day one on motorways, day two on lanes.
Single-track roads in Scotland — the etiquette?
Passing places are for passing AND overtaking courtesy: pull in for oncoming traffic and to release the queue behind you. Never park in them. The wave is mandatory culture.
London — congestion charge and ULEZ with a rental?
Both apply; rentals are ULEZ-compliant but the £15 congestion charge is your daily problem to pay online. Better: don't drive in London at all, collect the car heading out at a suburban depot.
Are UK speed cameras as dense as claimed?
Denser. Average-speed (SPECS) zones cover long motorway stretches and A-roads; the yellow boxes are mapped in every satnav. Fines reach hire cars efficiently; the 10%+2 tolerance folklore is folklore.
