Do you need an IDP for driving in Poland?
Poland (1968 convention) expects non-EU licenses to travel with an international permit; policja checks apply the rule at borders and roadside controls with Central European correctness, and EU-standard practice covers the rest.
Poland's enforcement is human-first (unmarked ITD and policja video cars on the A2/A4), which means your documents get read by people more often than machines. The 12-language format answers in Polish before they ask in English.
Renting a car in {country}
Warsaw and Kraków desks are modern and cheap by Western standards. Cross-border eastward (Ukraine, Belarus) is forbidden outright; Czechia/Slovakia/Germany usually fine with the letter. Winter tyres are seasonal law.
If you're stopped
Video-car overtaking enforcement is the Polish specialty, unmarked BMWs measuring over distance. Zero-ish alcohol (0.02%). Fines were raised sharply and mandate reads: the old folklore about negotiating is dead.

A-roads vs the old national roads?
The A1/A2/A4 grid is new, tolled and fast (e-toll via app for cars). The parallel DK roads are free, truck-heavy and where the video cars hunt. Pay the toll, save the hour.
Kraków–Zakopane in ski season?
The Zakopianka (DK7/S7) jams biblically on winter weekends, Friday south, Sunday north. Dawn departures or midweek, or the train. The Tatra parking fills by 8 in February.
Border-crossing rules for rentals?
West and south: standard with the rental's authorisation letter. East: forbidden by every mainstream contract, no exceptions; insurance stops at the Bug river.
What's the 0.02% practice?
Same as Nordic: driver drinks nothing. Morning checks near clubs exist. Poland pairs the limit with confiscation laws for extreme cases; the deterrence is structural now.
