Do you need an IDP for driving in Ireland?
Ireland accepts foreign licenses for visits with the usual readability economics: Latin-script cards pass desks; others need documentation the agent can process. Non-EU hirers meet Ireland's famous CDW/excess system more than any police check.
Where documentation bites in Ireland: credit-card CDW coverage (US cards) requires precise paperwork chains, and Garda checkpoints (mandatory alcohol testing operations) read licenses roadside. Both go smoother with the international format alongside.
Renting a car in {country}
Dublin and Shannon desks apply the world's most theatrical excess-insurance pitch (Ireland is excluded from many US card CDW programs; check yours by name). Cars are small because the roads are; take the smallest automatic you'll accept.
If you're stopped
Garda MIT checkpoints (alcohol/documents) appear on N-roads at night and weekend mornings. Limit 0.05%, lower for novices. Stops are chatty and quick with papers in order; this is still Ireland.

Decide before the desk: either your credit card explicitly covers Ireland CDW (bring the printed benefits letter, desks ask) or buy the standalone policy online beforehand. The desk product costs €25–40/day; the decision made at the counter is always the expensive one.
Ring of Kerry or Dingle with one day?
Dingle: shorter, wilder, ends in the best pub town in the west. Drive Slea Head clockwise. Kerry's coaches run anti-clockwise; if you do Kerry, go clockwise early or sit behind buses at viewpoint speed.
How narrow is actually narrow?
R- and L-roads west of Galway fit 1.7 cars between hedges. Locals fold mirrors at speed with telepathic passing-place timing. Your job: 40 km/h, left wheels brushing green, and breathe.
North to Belfast — border formalities?
None visible: you'll notice the speed signs switch to mph. Confirm the rental covers Northern Ireland (standard) and that's the entire bureaucracy. The Causeway Coastal Route is the reward.
