Do you need an IDP for driving in Iceland?
Iceland accepts foreign Latin-script licenses readily; others need international documentation. The real reading happens in claims: Iceland's rental insurance taxonomy (gravel protection, sand-and-ash, river-crossing exclusions) generates more paperwork per fender than anywhere in Europe.
When a claim file opens, and sheep, gravel and doors-vs-wind open them daily; your license data gets processed into Icelandic systems. Readable documentation keeps you on the fast side of that process, which matters when the deposit hold is four figures.
Renting a car in {country}
Keflavík's rental row is efficient; the insurance menu (GP, SAAP, and the rest) is worth reading; wind-opened doors and gravel chips are the two claims everyone makes. F-road access requires 4x4 by law, and contracts void on river crossings anyway.
If you're stopped
Sparse and unnecessary: cameras cover the Ring Road's towns and the 90 km/h national limit is respected because the weather enforces it first. Off-road driving is a criminal offence with real fines: tracks only, always.

Iceland questions, straight answers
Do I need a 4x4 for the Ring Road?
Summer: no: the Ring is paved and a Yaris does it. F-roads (Highlands) legally require 4x4 and close outside July–September. Winter: rent the 4x4 and the humility together.
What's the deal with wind and car doors?
Gusts rip held doors backward past their hinges; it's Iceland's #1 rental claim and standard insurance excludes it. Park nose-to-wind, hold doors with both hands, and believe the forecast's gust numbers.
River crossings in a rental?
Contractually void, universally. If your itinerary needs a ford (Þórsmörk), take the super-jeep bus in, cheaper than the engine you'd buy.
Are speed cameras really a thing out there?
In every town transition on Route 1, yes, 90 drops to 50 fast, and the fines are Nordic-sized. The camera before Vík has paid for itself many times over.
